Culture & History
The following morning will be an early start to enable you to climb the ancient Sigiriya Rock Fortress Sigiriya before it gets too hot. At almost 200 metres high, this UNESCO world heritage site declared as the 8th wonder of the world is quite a climb but well worth the effort; the views from the top are absolutely breathtaking. Choosing then between leisure time or additional site-seeing, you will have several opportunities to explore more of this beautiful, culturally rich area such as the Dambulla Rock Cave Temple, the ruins of Polonnaruwa and a village safari at Hiriwadunna Village.
The drive to Kandy is truly beautiful. You will pass by tea plantations and biodiverse rainforest on-route and even visit a spice garden where you will be able to ‘a taste of Sri Lanka’ to take home. Kandy is the last capital city of the ancient kings and whilst here, you will visit the most sacred Buddhist temples of all, the Temple of the Tooth Relic, located in the royal palace complex. This golden-roofed Temple houses Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist relic – a tooth of Buddha. As well as the main temple, the complex includes a series of smaller temples, shrines and museums.
You will also have the opportunity to see how tea is produced and taste the freshest cup of tea imaginable at a Tea Factory as you make your way to the city of Nuwara Eliya. Once there, you can enjoy either a guided city tour or take a leisurely stroll at your own pace through the delightful botanical gardens.
Heading further south, you will visit the Ravana Falls in Ella before continuing to Tissamaharama for your safari at the Yala National Park. Home to a variety of wild animals including 215 bird species, elephants, deer, water buffalo, sloth bears and monkeys, Yala also has one of the highest leopard densities in the world.
